Kanye West stuns 2022 BET Awards crowd with surprise appearance honoring friend Sean ‘Diddy’ Combs

Kanye West is back.

The musician, 45, made a rare public appearance at the 2022 BET Awards on Sunday to present the Lifetime Achievement Award to his friend Sean “Diddy” Combs with Kenneth “Babyface” Edmonds.

“How do we crown our kings? How do we value our kings? West – whose face was completely covered in a hat, sunglasses and a black mask – said onstage.

“I go to him for guidance to this day. He inspires so many of my choices, so many of my life choices. My spouse choice,” West continued, referencing his ex-wife Kim Kardashian, before adding with a laugh, “Thanks for that, Puff.”

“You know, I took a little break. I said, I just want to declare myself legally dead for a year. I just want to be off the grid and Puff is pretty persistent, but I had to think, bro, it’s like, people get amnesiac Like I should never have called Puff more than once Any of us in this room if Puff needs us we gotta jump up and be there This man went through [and] survived a lot and kicked down a lot of doors so we could be up… he kicked down so many doors of class, taste, swag. It was West’s first appearance at an awards show since the Grammys barred him from performing at the ceremony in April, despite his five nominations, due to “concerning online behavior.”

Earlier in March, West shared a music video for his single “Eazy” featuring The Game, in which a clay version of Davidson, 28, appears to have been kidnapped, tied up and buried. He then took down the video.

A source told PEOPLE at the time that Kardashian was “furious” and “shattered” by the music video. “She thinks it’s way too violent and she’s upset,” the source shared, noting that the reality star is “completely over it and she wants it to stop.”

Since then, Kardashian and West seem to have reached a better place. On Father’s Day last week, the two had dinner with their four children: Psalm, 3, Chicago, 4, Saint, 6, and North, 9.

“We had Father’s Day at home,” Kim said on Today. “The kids spent the day with him and then we had a big Father’s Day dinner and North cooked.”

“It’s okay,” added Kim, who filed for divorce from West in February 2021 after seven years of marriage.

Before Diddy’s speech, Jodeci, Mary J. Blige, Shyne, The Lox and Lil Kim, Busta Rhymes and Bryson Tiller performed alongside the superstar.

After playing a vocal note from his late ex Kim Porter, who died suddenly of lobar pneumonia in 2018, Diddy performed “I’ll Be Missing You” with Faith Evans and Maverick City Choir.

“Before I go, I want to donate a million dollars to Howard University, and I’m also going to drop another million dollars on Deon Sanders and Jackson State because we should be playing for us,” Diddy said. during his acceptance speech. “Thank you all from the bottom of my heart.”

Diddy founded his Bad Boy label in the early 1990s, and it has since grown into a hip-hop powerhouse, selling over 100 million records worldwide.
