Disney+ Announces New Lineup of Star Wars Series at Four-Day Star Wars Celebration Event in Anaheim

The world of Star Wars continues to expand via television.

Following the disappointing box office performance of Solo: A Star Wars Story (2018), Disney decided to slow the release of Star Wars theatrical blockbusters, opting instead for streaming on its Disney+ platform.

And the programming of the shows on the Disney file has been presented, in part, during the four-day 2022 Star Wars Celebration at the Anaheim Convention Center which kicked off Thursday, May 26, according to Deadline.

The first is the return of Ewan McGregor in Obi-Wan Kenobi, which takes place 10 years after Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith in 2005.

The series launched the first two episodes on the streaming service on Thursday, May 27.

The six-episode season follows Obi-Wan’s life in exile on Tatooine and marks the return of Hayden Christensen as Anakin/Darth Vader.

The cast also includes Rupert Friend, Sung Kang, Moses Ingram, Benny Safdie, Joel Edgerton, Bonnie Piesse, Simone Kessell, Vivien Lyra Blair, Flea, Jimmy Smits, Kumail Nanjiani, Marisé Álvarez, Rya Kihlstedt, Indira Varma and O’Shea Jackson . Jr.

Diego Luna reprises his role as rebel spy Cassian Andor in Andor, set five years before the events of Rogue One: A Star Wars Story.

Created by Tom Gilroy, who co-wrote Rogue One and four films in the Bourne franchise, the series follows a cast of characters as a rebel alliance forms against the Galactic Empire. One such character is Cassian Andor, a thief who becomes a revolutionary and eventually joins the rebellion.

Independent sons reports that Genevieve O’Reilly has been confirmed to return as Mon Mothma, and Stellan Skarsgård, Adria Arjona, Fiona Shaw, Denise Gough, Kyle Soller and Carl Staller will co-star.

The first two episodes are set to air this summer on August 31. The rest of the 12-episode season will air weekly.

A second season of 12 episodes is in development and will conclude the series.

There’s also the upcoming anthology series Tales Of The Jedi, which includes original animated shorts. The show will feature stories featuring Jedi from the prequel era, according to a report by Deadline.

The only other animated anthology to come to the Disney platform was Star Wars Vision in September 2021.

Tales Of The Jedi is set to drop in the fall.

Young Jedi Adventures is another new Star Wars series on the docket.

Set in the era of the High Republic, Young Jedi Adventures will follow youngsters as they learn the ways of the Force, while becoming fearless warriors.

Young Jedi Adventures is set to debut on both Disney+ and Disney Junior in 2023

And now, in a sign that it’s been a real hit, Dawson’s has gotten its own series, Ahsoka, which will have Dave Filoni serves as executive producer alongside showrunner Jon Favreau.

Hayden Christensen reprises his role as Anakin Skywalker/Darth Vader. The cast also includes Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Ivanna Sakhno and Natasha Liu Bordizzo.

Filming just began in early May 2022, so the Ashoka isn’t expected to debut on Disney+ until 2023.

Pedro Pascal is back in action in the third season of The Mandalorian.

After the events of Return of the Jedi, series creator Jon Favreau wrote most of the season, and Bryce Dallas Howard is expected to return as director.

Jon Watts, best known for directing the latest Spider-Man trilogy, is making his first foray into the world of Star Wars with Skeleton Crew.

Jude Law stars in the series which follows the fall of the Empire through the eyes of four children, ages 11 to 12.

Written by Spider-Man: Homecoming screenwriter Chris Ford, the show has been described as a “galactic take on classic 80s Amblin coming-of-age adventure movies.”

Other Star Wars series in the works include Rangers Of The New Republic, Lando, The Acolyte, and the animated feature A Droid Story.
