Young Thug’s lawyers file emergency bail petition, call his accommodation ‘inhumane’, ‘tortuous’

ATLANTA — Young Thug’s attorneys have filed an emergency motion for a bail hearing or “more humane/non-torturing custodial accommodation,” saying he was wrongfully charged.

The petition was filed Friday in Fulton County Superior Court.

The rapper, whose real name is Jeffrey Williams, was arrested at a Buckhead home on Monday in a sweeping gang indictment that also named 27 other people. Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis said those named in the indictment were members of the Young Slime Life gang, which has engaged in criminal activity in the city since 2012.

The 88-page indictment gives a detailed account of various crimes the alleged YSL members are charged with, and documents social media posts and rap lyrics that reference YSL.

Williams is charged with violating the state Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations Act and participating in a criminal street gang.

The rapper was initially jailed in Fulton County Jail, but moved to Cobb County for safety.

In the new petition, lawyers called Williams’ conditions of detention ‘inhumane’, saying he was being held in solitary confinement in a windowless cement room ‘as if he were a forgotten person alone in the world “.

“Mr Williams is being held in a small cement area. There is a light on all the time. He is being given inedible food, Williams’ lawyer Brian Steel told Channel 2 investigative reporter , Mark Winne “He has no contact with any human except his lawyer.”

Lawyers said the lights are kept on 24 hours a day preventing the rapper from sleeping and he has no access to any type of media. They said he had no opportunity to exercise, shower or have human interaction other than his attorney.

The Cobb County Sheriff said he is being held in administrative solitary confinement for his own safety, and that the lights remain on so officers can check in and make sure he is okay.

“He’ll be exonerated but that’s wrong,” Steel said. “He is being treated exactly the same as the person next to him who has been arrested, tried and convicted of murder and sentenced to death.”

Williams filed a bail petition on Tuesday but has yet to receive a date.

“The failure to schedule a bail hearing for this innocent man, coupled with the inhumane and unconstitutional treatment of Mr. Williams, compels this honorable court to grant bail until a hearing can take place,” the lawyers wrote. , asking that instead, “Williams not be held in solitary confinement and that he have access to televisions, windows, showers and other environments that remand inmates typically receive.

Steel said his client needed to be held in better conditions.

In the new motion, the attorneys said Young Thug was simply exercising his freedom of speech and doing his job, but that “the state is seeking to insinuate criminal conduct from song lyric quotes and social media posts.” social”.

They claim Williams’ arrest was a violation of his First and Fourteenth Amendment rights, which protect free speech and expression.

“There is no allegation from the Grand Jury that Mr. Williams had knowledge of this crime, knew that this rental vehicle would be used in a supposed crime, or that Mr. Williams was a party to this supposed crime,” they said. said the lawyers.

Lawyers argue that Williams should be given the option of posting bond because he is not a convicted felon, a flight risk, a danger to the community, at risk of committing a crime while on bail or at risk of bribing anyone before the trial.

The lawyers wrote:

The Bible, the Torah, the Koran, the Vedas and all similar texts of mankind as well as any conscious person would understand that to house a human being (in this case, Mr. Williams) under these conditions in America, in a Colony, while he has no criminal history, denies any allegations of wrongdoing, has only ever been cooperative, legal, and peaceful with authorities, and is presumed innocent, evil, illegal, and unconscionable. Mr. Williams is illegally and terribly abused by the authorities.
