Anna Faris is a work in progress.
The actor, 45, recently opened up in an interview with Chelsea Handler on Handler’s podcast, Dear Chelseaabout her post-divorce life and how she’s “still learning” to accept love in her life.
“Being a mother-in-law…I’m still learning. I really am,” she shared of co-parenting her new hubby Michael Barrett’s two children, who he had from a previous relationship. “I felt at first that I wanted to be kind of like that wild, new, reckless person in their life, because I was also going through a divorce.”
Faris married cinematographer Barrett in 2021, after meeting him on film At the sea.
She was previously married to Chris Pratt, before divorcing in October 2018. She and Pratt share a son, Jack, 9. Before Pratt, she was married to actor Ben Indra until their divorce in 2008.
Reflecting on how her split from Indra changed her perspective on life, Faris acknowledged, “there’s this kind of change that happens” after divorce.
“It hit hard the first time around,” she explained. “I became someone I didn’t recognize. Like, I was always the kind of person who stocked my fridge — and I hosted a lot of dinner parties. It was when I had friends. But then [post-divorce] I ended up in this apartment with just beer and mustard in the fridge, and I was going out all the time. I had no one to text or call to say, ‘Hey, can I do this?’ It was incredibly freeing, and I came back to when I was 17.
Talking about the intimate relationship she has with herself now, Faris admits it’s ‘slow growth’ when it comes to accepting love from others – which she can trace back to her childhood .
“I was terrified of not being a good lover, especially when I was younger,” she said. “I was so self-conscious about my body. I didn’t want anyone to see it, but I would dance around the edges. I wanted to be desperately wanted.
“My mother never complimented my physical appearance,” she explained. “I was such a late bloomer – had chubby cheeks, wore headgear for fucking years. I think my parents did this to me because they wanted me to remain a virgin,” adding, “it was definitely one of the struggles of my life.”
Faris’s eagerness to please people, combined with a desire to be desired by men, prompted her to make changes to her body to meet those needs.
“I just got fake boobs and bleached my hair. That was my strategy,” she said, adding that while she finds it easy to accept compliments on her work and her accomplishments, it’s always hard to accept praise for one’s appearance.” In Hollywood, if you’re at a thing and everyone’s beautiful and someone says, ‘I think you’re so beautiful,’ I don’t can’t absorb it very well. It’s a bit too much. »
After her second divorce, however, Faris says “it got easier” to accept love, but adds, “I still have a little trouble with that.”
While Faris is still learning the ups and downs of being a step-parent, she’s also been open about the realities of co-parenting with Pratt. Earlier this year, on his podcast Without reservationshe spoke openly about the difficulties.
“Chris and I work very hard [to coparent] because we have Jack,” she said. “It’s kind of a long game idea and making sure Jack is really happy, which makes us really happy. We have, in a way, the luxury of the circumstances. You know, we’re both in other romantic relationships, but it’s like, how can you not, in general, get bitter?”
Although she admits that raising a child with her ex presents challenges, at the end of the day, she wishes the best for everyone.
“I want to reiterate though that I recognise, we all do, everyone recognises, that there is bitterness and pain with all breakups, and that hopefully makes us more human. “, she explained. “But the long game, and that’s just the worst part of being the biggest person. That’s right. That’s fucking shit! Until then, what [matters most] is that everyone is happy.”
